Through the massive planting, harvesting and processing of rushes, reeds and grienden, a lively trade known as the shrub and reed culture flourished. A visit to this beautiful open-air museum offers a unique look at a bygone era full of craftsmanship and connection with nature.

We walk across the bridge and during the crossing we pass the Biesbosch Museum Island. Here you can learn about the unique story of the historical development of the Biesbosch. The museum café Biesonder is freely accessible. You can eat and drink something there or use the restrooms. More information about rates, opening hours and accessibility can be found on their website: Biesbosch Museum Island.

Hiking through the Noordwaard polder

We continue our tour. You have the chance to enjoy a walk through the Noordwaard polder, where an old network of creeks has been brought back to life. Here, ebb and flow can once again leave their mark on the landscape. This freshwater tidal area took its shape after the devastating St. Elizabeth Flood of 1421. When packrafting at high tide, chances are that the Noordwaard polder will be marshy or flooded. Be sure to wear sturdy, waterproof shoes.
