Preparation is half the battle
Before you go packrafting, make sure you are well prepared. Check your equipment, pack enough water and snacks, make sure you have a charged cell phone and possibly a charged power bank. Before you leave, check the weather forecast so you can look for appropriate clothing. Will the Ourthe be accessible today? You can find out here here. Is the Ourthe marked in dark green, then you can go boating. If the route is colored red, there is a boating ban for that day. At the top of the map you can click on ‘legend’ for more explanation of the color codes. In addition, this website also indicates if there are any obstacles: for example, a fallen tree lying across the river.
Bomal, a borough of Durbuy
We start the packraft adventure at the Diaisne parking lot in Bomal. Here we leave the car and then head towards the Ourthe. After 850 m you will arrive at the place, next to the bridge where we will enter the water. Get your equipment out of your backpack, inflate your raft, snap together your paddle, put on your life jacket and make sure your personal belongings are in a waterproof bag. Ready? Here we go!
Discover the splendor of the Ourthe River
Domaine de Palogne: walking through history
The walk is about 11 km long and offers a chance to further explore the beauty of the area on foot. At 15.4 km (after walking about 5 km), we can enjoy a beautiful view of the rocks of Sy and the Ourthe valley. Then we turn left through a small gate. Here we come to the cave: Trou de la Veuve Frankignoul. This cave is home to many bat species. Enjoy the beautiful but tough and steep singletracks you walk. Once down, we go back through a gate and turn right to Domaine de Palogne. Once on Domaine de Palogne you have a tavern and restrooms on the right. On this beautiful estate, our route passes Château Fort de Logne. At the end of Antiquity to the beginning of the 5th century, a garrison was stationed here. In the 9th century, the place provided shelter to monks of Stavelot fleeing from the Normans. It became an important center associated with the abbey, and a fortified castle was erected there. Later, at the end of the Middle Ages, the site fell into the hands of the infamous bandits “Wild Boars of the Ardennes.” Finally, it was bombed and destroyed in 1521 on the orders of Charles V. The castle has a rich history. More information (opening hours, prices,…) about the tavern and castle can be found at here find. Attention: around 17 km, you have historic stone steps. Beautiful but very slippery in rain. Provide hiking shoes with a firm grip. To finish, we walk past Château Bomal-Sur-Ourthe (from 1776), through the beautifully maintained park, back to the car.
