Starting at the Hemmekes
We park the car in the parking lot of meeting center De Hemmekes in Scherpenheuvel-Zichem. This route is also ideal for anyone who likes to travel by public transportation. Zichem Station is not far from the meeting center De Hemmekes. Time schedules and online tickets can be found on the website of the NMBS (the National Railway Company of Belgium): click here. Between the parking lot and the Demer, you will find a grassy area with picnic benches. This grassland is also called the Hemmekes, just like the meeting center. Hemmekes comes from the Old Dutch word “ham,” which means knee hole. For this particular place, this means it is located in the knee-hollow of the Demer River.
Relaxed paddling on the Demer
The Demer is a river in Flanders no less than 85km long. This river has a rich history. It used to be an important shipping route for trade: wool, sheets, beer barrels, hay, grain oand stones. Now it is especially loved by nature lovers and adventurers. When we launch our Packraft at the Hemmekes, our adventure begins.
After 996 m (No. 20) we come to a fork, here we paddle to the right. On the left you will see an undercutting mill, recognizable by the large water wheel. The miller slightly raises the weir at the bottom when he starts grinding. The wheel is set in motion by the water being pushed under the wheel with force. The wheel sets the mill’s grinding mechanism in motion and that is how the grain is ground. The little bridge you see along it, we’ll come back to that later. After 1.29 km you sail past the Voortberg. The 50-m-high hill used to be covered with vines and a coveted location for ironstone mining. We paddle a total of 12.4 km on the Demer with varied views. We arrive at the
Beemden Bridge and moor after the bridge, on the right bank (No. 289). This is the ideal time to take a break. This place is equipped with a convenient picnic table where you can enjoy lunch.
A walk to enjoy
We pack up our Packraft, but the adventure is not over yet! Before you leave, look back. That way you can see where you were sitting and check that you haven’t forgotten anything. Nothing forgotten? Then we continue our trek on foot, surrounded by vast fields and fertile farmland. This region, between Aarschot and Zichem, is known for its agricultural activities. You will see numerous farms growing various crops such as potatoes, corn and sugar beets. The alternation of fields, meadows and forests makes this hike particularly attractive. Keep
consider the winter period or a period of heavy rainfall. The area quickly floods, making it less to no accessible. They let the areas flood locally so that a fertile silt remains on the land, which is important for agriculture. After 19.5 km you pass Testelt station. We pass a coffee house ‘Statiehuis’ where you can have a drink or if you want to buy another bottle of water, you can do so at newspaper shop Kurt. There is also a chip shop nearby: Bart’s corner. In the middle of Testelt we walk past the St. Peter’s Church. This church was built in 1845 and is mainly constructed of iron sandstone. Shortly after, we cross the Demer again via the bridge of the Dijk. Once you pass the elementary school ‘t stokpaardje, you see a sculpture across the street: Ernest Claes. Ernest Claes was a Belgian writer, born in Zichem (1885). He is best known for his colorful and often autobiographical stories that explore the life of the common man in the Flemish countryside. Claes’ style is characterized by his vivid descriptions and a sense of humor, which makes his work accessible and relatable. In his books, Ernest Claes was inspired several times by the nature reserve “the Demerbroeken” through which we walked. We walk over the small bridge with the underlay mill that we have just seen from a distance and soon we arrive back at the parking lot. Did you come by train? Then walk a little further to the station.
