River Saar - View of Baumwipfelpfad and Burg Montclair from the river while packrafting

From mountain trail to river: heading to the Saar for your packraft trip

We leave the car in the paid parking lot of the Baumwipfelpfad. The parking lot has a restroom facility that you can use for free. Before you set out, check that you have everything with you. Ready? Here we go! Our route starts right away with a tough descent. Along the way you will encounter ostriches. Do you read that right? Yes indeed! We walk past an ostrich farm. Nice to see. After 1.85 km, the descent gets spicier, but no less beautiful. Water flows down to our left, allowing us to admire small waterfalls in places. Once down we have a view of the river “Saar” on which we are about to go packrafting. When we cross the bridge after 7.2 km we are almost at our boarding point. On the left side of the bridge you can already see the trailer ramp. There we enter the water.

Packrafting on the Saar: past treetops, castles and steep climbs

We are preparing for the water adventure. Inflate your packraft, snap together the paddle and attach your backpack to the packraft. Look around carefully to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything before you hit the water. As we calmly sail down the Saar in our packraft, a whole new world opens up around us. The diverse forest that surrounds the river reveals its beauty from a unique perspective. Around 12 km you get a view of the Baumwipfelpfad that rises above the treetops on top of the mountain. After the turn is Burg Montclair on the right. In the distance you can already see the weir, here we keep to the right. Our disembarkation point is clearly marked with a blue sign. Just behind the blue sign you can disembark. On the grass you can quietly stow your packraft equipment again. We still have a nice but tough 6 km ahead of us. We walk along the water until 18.2 km, here we turn right. The 1 km uphill climb requires a good basic condition. At the observation platforms you can take a rest and enjoy beautiful panoramic views that you will not soon forget. The real daredevils can book an overnight stay in a Cloefhänger. The sleeping place hangs between the trees at a height of two meters, right on the edge of the steep slopes of the Saar. So you
can enjoy maximum panoramic views with the sunset and sunrise. You can visit their website take a look for additional information, conditions and rates.
