Packrafting on the Vézère River

Our adventure begins in Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère. Coming out of the parking lot, we turn right. This way we pass the public toilets (No. 1) and head toward the Vézère River. Here we have the space to quietly inflate our packraft with the accompanying air bag. Re-inflate the packraft with the mouth so that it is solid. Snap the paddle together and check that all parts are secure. Then you can still attach the backpack to the packraft and you are ready to paddle. The Vézère is calm, shallow and accessible to everyone, including beginners. There are no dams or dangerous rapids. Around the bend around 4.85 km you will see a real limestone wall. This impressive wall is no less than a kilometer long and 80 meters high! Due to erosion by the Vézère River and frost over thousands of years, about a hundred rocky shelters have been excavated on the aerial terraces.
These natural cavities have been inhabited by humans since prehistoric times and then developed into a fortress and a troglodyte city. Enjoy the view and don’t worry, soon we will walk past this again. At 7.53 km you can catch a glimpse among the trees of Maison Forte de Reignac, a castle in a cliff. You’ll see it better later when we walk past it. Shortly after, we paddle under a bridge and keep to the left. There we see our disembarkation point, via the stairs we can get out of the water. There is a large grassy area with picnic benches. Ideal to stow your packraft equipment again and enjoy your tasty lunch. The trees provide plenty of shady
places.

A prehistoric walk

Before you leave, make sure you haven’t left anything behind. Everything with you? Then we’re off to Maison Forte de Reignac. La Maison Forte de Reignac is a castle at the top of a cliff, built against the protective rock face and is definitely worth a visit! Those interested should check in advance the opening hours and rates on the website. We continue our route and after about 13.5 km we see the gigantic limestone wall that we have just seen from the water. This is La Roque Saint Christophe. It is listed and houses the largest troglodyte complex in Europe. The very first humans to seek refuge here were the Neanderthals, 55,000 years ago! Homo sapiens followed, with Cro-Magnon, a few thousand years later. After decades of continuous human habitation, 350 years without any activity were enough for nature to restore itself. A visit to La Roque Saint Christophe is sure to add value to an unforgettable packraft adventure and will take an average of 1.5 hours of your time. Information on opening hours and rates can be found here. Those who want to visit both La Maison Forte de Reignac and La Roque Saint Christophe can obtain tickets at a more advantageous rate. If you want to walk further, you can simply continue along the road ‘Route de la Préhistoire’. On the left side you have a restaurant ‘Les Delices de La Roque’. We walk our last 6km back to Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère where the car is parked. Along the way you can still enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. Caution: in rain, the narrow forest paths with stones can be slippery. Walking shoes with good grip are definitely recommended.
