Preparing for the River of Rain
Start your Packraft adventure by renting your complete equipment from Rent a Packraft – after all, your adventure isn’t complete without it! The equipment is delivered to your home quickly and easily, so you don’t have to worry. Tip: Rent a drysuit as well, so you stay completely dry. After all, chances are you’re going to get wet at the boat slide. Check on the day if paddling is allowed on the Rain that day. You can check here easy to check. At ‘Befahrbarkeit’ you will see in green ‘befahrbar’ or in red ‘nicht befahrbar’. The minimum water level must be 58 cm for paddling. Attention: In case of flooding, it also indicates ‘Befahrbar’ because there is no maximum on the system. It goes without saying that in case of floods, do not packraft and choose an alternative route.
In addition, it is wise to check the weather forecast so you can pack the right clothing. Dress yourself in layers so you can always take something on or off depending on the conditions. Sturdy hiking shoes are definitely recommended for the hiking sections of the route. Make sure you have the GPX route on your navigator so you don’t get lost. Bring plenty of snacks, water and lunch to keep your energy level up. Handy items such as tissues, a charged power bank, a first aid kit, a towel and possibly sunscreen or insect repellent should not be missing. With these preparations you will be optimally equipped for an unforgettable experience in the beautiful Naturpark Oberer Bayerische Wald.
Starting at Blaibacher See
Near the parking lot we find Kiosk am Blaibacher See. This is open from May to October. Here you can eat something on the spot and have a beautiful view of Blaibacher See. Below the reservoir you see a large information board and a small, high sign ‘Einstieg’. Here we go up the river ‘Schwarzer Regen’. Take your packraft equipment out of your backpack, inflate the packraft with the accompanying air bag and snap together the paddle. Put important items that shouldn’t get wet into the waterproof pouch and look around to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything. Re-inflate your packraft with your mouth just before going on the water. Then attach the backpack to the front of the packraft. Are you ready? Then head down the steps and begin our wonderful route!
A packraft adventure on the Rain
Boating on the Schwarzer Regen is only allowed between 10 am and 6 pm. Paddling is only allowed with a minimum water level of 58 cm. After 200 m, the Weißen Regen merges with the Schwarzer Regen and we continue paddling on the Regen. After 1.29 km we paddle under a railroad bridge built in 1927. In 1990 damage to the bridge was discovered that was not repaired, the railroad closed in 1991. A little further on, there are rocks across the water. It’s best to paddle to the right side here to pass that way. You’ll next see a large bridge; here too are stones. Be careful to keep paddling on the deepest parts. From 6.35 km (no.3) we see a lot of rocks in the water (according to the water level), keep paddling here in the middle on the left side. Afterwards, the rocks go sporadically in the river, so watch carefully which passage suits you best. Once we are 12 km behind, we see the dam. On the left side of that dam there is a slide provided for the boats. Here you sail off and keep to the left to get off just before the bridge. We are now in Chamerau.
Naturpark Oberer Bayerischer Wald
You have enough space here to store the packraft equipment back in your backpack. Those who like to have a terrace can do so at the adjacent beer garden ‘Zur Schleus’n’. Across the road you can see the parish church ‘St. Peter und Paul’. Along the parking lot of this church there is a public toilet building. Always handy to know. We start the hiking part. For this we cross the big bridge, through Chamerau center, towards the forest. There we start our tough climb to the top of Kleiner Roßberg. I can already tell you that it is definitely worth it! Once at the top you will enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of Chamerau and Lamberg. By then you have already covered 14.4 km. Along the large cross, there is a bench to rest for a while. We descend in the direction of Blaibach. During the descent, at 18 km, you once again have a beautiful panoramic view of Miltach. In Blaibach you have several eateries and sights including the famous “Konzerthaus Blaibach”. We pass at the edge of the center to take the bridge that crosses the Regen River for our last 5 km. The last bit we walk along Blaibacher See. This lake was created after the completion of the balancing power plant in October 1964. The reservoir not only provides hydroelectric power for electricity, but is also a popular tourist destination. Enjoy some more beautiful views and before you know it, you’ll be back where we started.
