Start renting your full packraft gear online immediately through Rent a Packraft. The great thing is that everything is delivered to your home quickly, so you don’t have to worry about when to go pick up the gear. Bring plenty of snacks, water and a nutritious lunch. Think energy bars, nuts and fruit – ideal for a quick boost while on the road. Also, keep an eye on the weather forecast before you leave. This will help you choose the right clothing and equipment so you are well prepared for the conditions. In addition, check online to see if boating is allowed on the Altmühl on the day of your adventure. Pay attention to things like water levels and possible flooding: safety comes first! If the Altmühl is not navigable that day, choose another river. Read the local rules here, so you won’t have any surprises. Since the route contains tough sections with climbs and descents, it is crucial to wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. After all, you want to take every step with confidence. You can put lighter shoes and spare socks in the car, that way you can change shoes immediately after the hike. Also, don’t forget to bring a charged power bank for your phone, as well as tissues and a basic first aid kit for any accidents. Hiking poles can provide extra support, especially on the more challenging sections of the trail. If you go in the summer, make sure you carry bug spray and sunscreen. This will keep you comfortable and protected while enjoying nature. With these preparations, you’ll be all set for an unforgettable experience in the Altmühltal!
Adventurous hike along the Altmühl: Burg Arnsberg and the Witches' Rock
We begin our tough but breathtaking route. After 367 m, we begin our brisk climb toward Burg Arnsberg. The grounds house the remains of the central castle, including the remnant of the Romanesque keep, an extensive outer castle with a medieval moat, rampart and castle gate. The forecourt building was erected in 1578 and underwent conversion into a hotel in 1972. Behind Burg Arnsberg there are beautiful panoramic views. At 4.89 km we pass the Arndthöhle, a 30 m deep cave. This cave is closed from October 31 to March 31. They close this cave in winter to protect the bats. Bats hibernate, if disturbed and thus awakened, they consume large amounts of energy reserves. This can cause them to starve, even before they can fly out in the spring. Once we cross the main road, our adventure really begins. Exciting, winding singletracks uphill. You hike past impressive rocks and regularly enjoy beautiful views. Be careful not to trip over the tree roots and rocks. These can be slippery when it rains. In some places a rope is provided so you can hold yourself to it. At 11.1 km we come to the witches’ rock, here again you have a nice panoramic view and a bench. A good time to take a rest before starting our solid descent. Take the descent with small smooth steps and always keep your weight and body above your feet. That way, you put strain on the entire sole of your foot and avoid slipping easily. At the steeper part, you
can choose to descend sideways. You then put the long side of your foot perpendicular to the ground so you have a larger contact area with the ground. This will keep you more stable. Make sure your knees are always slightly bent. After 17.6 km we take the bridge over river Altmühl. This is the river we are about to packraften on. After the bridge take the first path to the left and follow this road until you come to a parking lot. There you can already see the Walting weir. We enter the water 100 m further, on the left side of this weir.
Start your packraft adventure on the Altmühl: practical and unforgettable
Find a lovely spot on the grass where you can prepare your packraft equipment. Inflate your packraft using the accompanying bladder bag and then firmly blow the last of the air with your mouth. Assemble your paddle and put on your drysuit. When you have put your dry gear in the dry bag, we can attach the packraft to the raft. For this you use the tension strap. Check again that you don’t leave anything on the grass and then you are ready to go. At 21.7 km (no. 43) we paddle past Wasserburg Rieshofen. Wasserburg Rieshofen is a small
water castle ruin of which only the keep remains. The keep is 17 to 18 m high. Supposedly, this water castle was built around 1250. At the beginning of the 17th century it was already half destroyed. The keep is clearly visible from the water. We sail under the bridge and continue our route. The Altmühlbrücke you see at 27.4 km is the landmark of the end. Paddle on the right side under the bridge to then moor. You are now also directly at the car. You can repack everything and change your shoes. Before you leave, be sure to check the ground to make sure nothing has fallen or you haven’t forgotten anything.
