A wonderful start on the Niers

We start with a refreshing walk along the river Niers. Here we immediately pass our first attraction: Burg ruin Wachtendonk. The Burg ruïne Wachtendonk is a historic ruin dating back to the 13th century. We can enjoy the charm of the medieval past as we walk through the remains of the castle. After 1.25 km we cross the little bridge on the left and walk through the Heksenbos (Hexenwald) towards the abbey: Abtei Mariendonk. This abbey is an active Cistercian abbey and is known for its serene atmosphere and beautiful architecture. You can also find an abbey shop there. A little further on, we enjoy the Jungle Trail. The jungle trail leads you through a dense forest area where you can enjoy the tranquility of nature. Around 8.73 km we turn right and cross the bridge. Who wants to shorten the hiking section can continue Niederfeld instead of turning right. Then, of course, you miss the Schwingbodenpark in Grefrath. We walk past Dorenburg, a protected castle. Around this castle is open-air museum Lower Rhine. Would you like to take a look, please check here the website for current opening hours and rates. On the left side we see the Eissportzentrum Grefrath. This ice complex has a 400 m outdoor artificial ice rink, an ice hockey/artificial driving hall and a skating tent with an ice surface of no less than 1,800 m². Diagonally opposite the artificial ice rink is the outdoor swimming pool. Here we pass by to walk through the Schwingboden Park to the city center. Just before we return to nature, we pass a supermarket (Netto). Handy if you wanted to buy snacks or extra drinks. On a beautiful forest path we return to the Niers to enter the water after 16.3 km.

Explore the Niers with a packraft

The entry point is easily accessible and provides a safe start to packrafting. The Niers is a gently flowing river with an average current speed of 2 km/h. This is ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy the tranquility and nature around them. Upon arrival in Wachtendonk, there are toilets in the parking lot, which is convenient after a while on
