Packraft Trail Monschau – Dedenborn (13 km, class 2)

Packraft on the flowing Rur, surrounded by forests and rock walls in the German Eifel near the Ardennes.

Adventure along the Rur - from Monschau to Dedenborn (approx. 13 km)

You get in at Monschau – a charming town in the Eifel, with half-timbered houses, steep streets and that typical cozy German village feel. But beyond that is the river: the Rur. A river that with its winding course, forests and quiet stretches as well as active passages offers the perfect setting for a one-day packraft trip. And yes: in this case we are talking about a route of about 13 km – just right for a day trip.

Start in Monschau: quiet river and beautiful nature

Arrival in Dedenborn after 13 km of packraften through the Eifel region.

Once you arrive at the boarding point, get out your gear: your packraft, your paddle, your life jacket/helmet. Boarding at Monschau immediately offers that moment of letting go. The tourists in the village streets, the buzz of cafes – you leave it behind. As the Rur hugs you, you see the edge of town fade away, the forest getting closer and closer.

The first few miles are relatively quiet: the water flows, but you have time to get into the rhythm. You hear waterfalls at a distance, birds scream from the forest, and the trees reflect in the water. The trail lets you enjoy pure nature for a while. This is the “beautiful river” as you look for it – not overcrowded, but with character.

Packraft challenge on the Rur: currents, curves and obstacles (class 2)

After about three to four kilometers, you quickly realize: this is no leisurely float – the Rur near Monschau grabs you immediately with its current. As the river makes its way deeper through the Eifel forest, you notice how the pace increases and the turns become tighter. This is where the class-2 experience begins: enough challenge to keep you on your toes without becoming dangerous. Officially, canoeing on the Rur is allowed mainly in spring, when the water level is high enough.

Please note that there may be trees or branches in the water on this trail. The forest causes the occasional branch to cross the water or a tree to lie partially there. So make sure your steering is sharp – and never go alone. Two men (or more) brings safety as well as sociability: if you have something, help is there.

The water level is also important: at levels between 50 cm and 100 cm, the route will sail well. Lower can be calmer, but then you may get stuck on obstacles more often. High weather (over 80 cm) means stronger currents, which is fun/challenging, but also requires more attention.

Eifel or Ardennes? Packrafting in the border region of Germany

Packrafter steps into the Rur near Monschau for the one-day packraft trail towards Dedenborn, Eifel Germany.

You are in Germany, in the Eifel – but because of its location and nature, it sometimes feels like the Ardennes. Dense forests, jagged rock faces, wildly flowing water. As you cruise, you might see kingfishers along the bank, or hear a woodpecker in the distance. The light plays between leaves – there comes that moment when you realize why you are doing this: freedom, nature, adventure.

As you approach in the direction of Dedenborn, you notice that the landscape changes slightly: the river curves, the slopes become a little milder, but you remain in the midst of greenery. Dedenborn itself is a small hamlet in the municipality of Simmerath. The exit moment is coming.

End of the trail: get off at Dedenborn on the Rur River

After about 13 km you arrive at Dedenborn, the logical exit point (before the bridge). You feel in your arms that you have worked, but also that there has been time to enjoy. Getting out is often simple: make sure you know in advance where to get out (bridge, bank, access). Once out of the water, you can relax, eat something and let the experience doze off.

Then comes the logistics: how do you get back to your car? Often a shuttle or car at the final destination is convenient. So consider transportation in advance.
